Due to her Western-sounding name and distinct appearance, it is implied that she may have some non-Japanese ancestry. Her presence quickly draws attention—both from her colleagues and students.
Maria is an acquaintance of Tora Igarashi, who recruited her to teach at Seika High as part of a scheme to drive Usui away. Her revealing outfits, petite stature, and voluptuous figure make her the center of unwanted attention from male staff and students alike. Misaki, sensing trouble, instinctively steps in to protect her—leading Maria to develop romantic feelings for Misaki. Though Misaki initially views her as a possible rival for Usui;s affection, Maria eventually confesses her love for Misaki outright. While she is technically engaged to a man named Shinji, she regards him as nothing more than a childhood friend. Maria is also aware of Misaki's secret part-time job at Maid Latte.
